NEW DELHI: Former Indian captain MS Dhoni will have an opportunity to etch his name in the record books by becoming the second cricketer after Suresh Raina to score 5000 runs in T20s for the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday evening as he takes the field in the Indian Premier League game between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
Touted as “El Clasico” of IPL, the encounter between the most successful teams in the history of the competition promises to be a riveting one.

With 4996 runs to his name in 249 matches played so far, Dhoni is on the brink of the significant milestone.

If he manages to score at least four runs during match No. 29 of IPL 2024, Dhoni will join his former teammate Raina in the elite 5000-run club. Raina, during his illustrious playing days, amassed 5529 runs in 200 matches for CSK.
Dhoni’s potential achievement would also see him become the fourth Indian cricketer to surpass the 5000-run mark for one team in the shortest format of the game, following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Raina.

Debuting for CSK on April 19, 2008, Dhoni has been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family ever since. While he briefly represented the Rising Supergiants in 2016 and 2017 due to CSK’s suspension, Dhoni’s loyalty and impact have remained unwavering.

Dhoni’s legacy in the IPL is already firmly established, with the veteran cricketer currently ranking as the seventh-leading run-scorer in the league’s history. With 5121 runs amassed in 255 matches, Dhoni is on the cusp of surpassing AB de Villiers’s record of 5162 runs, making him the sixth-highest run-scorer in IPL history if he manages to add 40 runs to his tally in the ongoing season.
