Entry level hospitality jobs zoom in 2 years



CHENNAI: The surge in tourism after the pandemic has had a trigger effect on hospitality hiring. While hiring has seen an upsurge across the board, entry level hiring of apprentices/trainees has seen the sharpest surge, say industry head hunters.
According to TeamLease, while apprentices and trainee hires overall have grown at a CAGR of 54% in the last two years, hospitality sector hiring in this category has increased by a whopping 271% over the same period.
Dhriti Prasanna Mahanta, VP, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, said, “There’s been a sharp rise in hiring numbers across job levels, thanks to the tourism boom, with F&B seeing a 37% spike, and housekeeping jobs up 22%. More skilled jobs at higher levels have also seen a 8-10% surge while the rest of the hospitality hire spectrum is up 18-20%.”
The surge is sharpest at the entry level, and the tourism & hospitality industry’s contribution to total apprentices en rolled in India has grown 5.4 times in the last two years (from 0.4% in 2020-21 to 2.4% in 2022-23). Hoteliers say this is a signal of hospitality getting its mojo back. Sabu Raghavan, VP (HR), Hilton India, said, “The surge in hiring in the organised hotel sector observed in CY23 is indicative of the sector’s resilience, growth poten tial, and strategic expansion. The underlying fundamentals and emerging trends suggest a positive outlook for the sector, with the momentum expected to continue into CY24.”
Others say the momentum will be longer lived. According to South India Hotels and Restaurants Association honorary secretary T Natarajan, this trend of opening of new hotels and creation of jobs in the hospitality sector will continue till 2030, which would be aboost to the Indian economy. The number of hotels opening in tier-2 and 3 cities will also continue, he added.
The post-pandemic rush for travel has already led to fresh investments in hospitality, with July-September 2023 witnessing a surge in key signings and hotel inaugurations, as highlighted in JLL’s Hotel Momentum India report. As many as 34 hotels were unveiled, contributing 2,400 rooms to the organised hotel sector. Over 80% of these establishments emerged in tier-2 and 3 cities.
Hospitality head hunters say the job spike comes with salary hikes, too. “There has been a15% increase in stipend to trainees, whereas for permanent and skilled employees, the cost to company hike has been 8-10%,” said Mahanta. While earlier, tourism hires in the entry segment were seasonal, they now see year-long activity.
A recent Hotel Association of India report has projected that the hotel industry’s direct contribution to India’s GDP will hit $1 trillion by 2047, with a minimum 25% rise in the need for workforce.
