Debt taxing economy, says govt; BRS hits back

HYDERABAD: The Congress government released a white paper on Telangana’s finances in the assembly on Wednesday, while attacking the previous BRS government over the state’s debt. Among the departments with heavy loan burden was the Telangana civil supplies corporation (Rs56,146 crore) and energy department (Rs30,520 crore), according to the white paper.

Deputy chief minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said that Telangana’s budgeted expenditure on education and health was among the lowest in the country. Quoting PRS’ state finances report (October 2023), the white paper said Telangana was projected to allocate only 5% of its overall budgeted expenditure to health and family welfare, ranking fourth in the country and falling 1.2% points below the national average of 6.2%. In summary, it was said there was a difference of over 20% between budgeted and actual expenditure in Telangana, which was not only large when compared to other states but also when compared to the expenditure in unified Andhra Pradesh.
