Hyderabad: Aggrieved by the killing of Varun Raj Pucha in the US, his father has decided to launch a movement in support of safety of Indian students studying abroad. P Ram Murthy, a teacher himself, intends to not just make it a national appeal but also turn it into an international movement.
Varun Raj was stabbed on his head at a gym at Valparaiso in Indianapolis on October 29 and succumbed to his injuries at a hospital later. His body is expected to arrive in Khammam on Friday. The suspect has been arrested.
“We are grieving; my son has become a victim of mindless violence. We sent him abroad for his master’s studies and we had great dreams for him just as he had great ambitions for himself. Our dreams have been shattered. We are still unable to digest the fact that he has been murdered in a gruesome manner,” Ram Murthy told TOI.
Ram Murthy, who holds a doctorate in human resources, said that his son’s murder was not a stray incident. “There have been incidents of murder and violence involving Indian students. We cannot look at each incident as an isolated one and go on with life. Something must be done to give our students assurance for their safety in which ever country they are studying,” Ram Murthy said.
He said he has already got in touch with some of the Indian families who have lost their sons and daughters in other countries in various incidents. Ram Murthy is also planning to organise a seminar in Delhi to raise the concerns of parents of Indian students studying abroad and wants to take it as a movement across the country.
He questioned why the gym where the stabbing took place allowed someone of questionable behaviour into the gym in the first place. “Should not the US government take responsibility for safety of our students,” he sought to ask.
“I want to make it abundantly clear that the reason why I am raising my voice is not with the intention of getting compensation. My initiative has a larger purpose and that is, safety of Indian students studying abroad,” Ram Murthy said.
